Closed Comedones

Whiteheads are an ongoing skin issue that shouldn’t be ignored. If left untreated, it can worsen. Are there any effective treatments to remove them and restore a smooth face?

What is Comedone?

A comedone is a bump caused by a trapped hair follicle. There are two types: closed and open.

Open Comedone

Whiteheads are tiny hair follicles that are clogged but not visible on the skin.

Closed Comedone

Blackheads are small openings in the skin where debris collects and oxidizes, causing a dark color.

Closed comedones, also known as whiteheads, are a mild type of acne caused by excess sebum production in hair follicles. When the follicle opening is blocked by keratinization, the sebum, bacteria, and dead cells are unable to reach the skin’s surface and become trapped.

Symptoms

Closed comedones can be red, white, or black. Red ones are infected, black ones are oxidized sebum, and whiteheads are the most common and appear as small white dots on the face. They feel bumpy to the touch but don’t cause redness, swelling, pain, or itchiness. They’re typically found on the forehead, chin, cheeks, around the lips, and wings of the nose and make the skin look rough under bright light.

Causes

Excessive sebum production causes whiteheads. When keratinisation closes the hair follicle opening, sebum cannot reach the skin surface and becomes trapped under the skin, forming a bump without a top opening.

1. Hormonal change

Unhealthy habits like irregular sleep, eating too many fatty or sugary foods, and being overworked can alter hormone levels. This can lead to an imbalance of water and oil in the skin, as well as excessive sebum production from the sebaceous glands due to increased androgen hormones.

2. Unhealthy diet

Certain food choices can lead to greasy skin and the formation of comedones. These include consuming high amounts of sugar and/or fat, drinking milk, and not getting enough vitamin B. To improve closed comedone issues, it’s suggested to make dietary changes.

3. Poor skin cleansing routine

Over-washing or using soap-based cleanser creates water-oil imbalance and over-peeling, excessive use of cotton pad or over-scrubbing damages skin surface, which makes sebaceous glands produce more sebum – increasing the likelihood of closed comedones. Under-washing like leaving makeup or sebum can block follicles and cause comedones.

4. Psychological factors

Consistent high stress, anxiety, irritability, or anger can disrupt normal hormonal secretion and lead to skin issues.

Chemical peel, offered by Skinspire Laser&Skin Clinic is a skin treatment that uses acidic solution to remove the outermost layer of skin cells. This process encourages skin cell renewal, improves the condition of the skin, and can also help with issues such as acne, fine lines, blackheads, and uneven skin tone.

How does Chemical Peel work

A Chemical Peel Solution can separate cells in the outer layer of skin by dissolving oil particles, removing excess keratin buildup, and preventing clogged hair follicles. It also stimulates skin cell regeneration and collagen production to improve skin texture, minimize pores, and brighten the skin.
